Being Alone vs. Loneliness

Being alone means being by yourself, without the company of another person. Loneliness, on the other hand, is a feeling of abandonment and sadness due to isolation or distance from others.

Being alone is a physical state, while loneliness is a state of mind, an emotion. You can be in a room full of people and still feel lonely. It’s not about the number of people around you, but how you feel inside. You can be happy while being alone, but when you feel lonely, happiness is hard to find.

Being alone can have its benefits: it allows you to focus on a project without distractions or enjoy solitary activities, like going for a walk, which gives you personal time for inner reflection and emotional introspection.

Loneliness, however, is emotional pain, often caused by the loss of a loved one or the rejection from friends who exclude you simply because they didn’t want you there.

To overcome loneliness:
Focus on a hobby. Do something you love that will help shift your focus.
Move your body. Exercise releases endorphins, which are responsible for feelings of well-being.

Never be afraid of being alone. Too many people think being alone means feeling lonely. Wrong—being alone can be controlled, and loneliness can be overcome.
